RISK

A bigger clip is a different trade than the one you won

The size that just made your week is not the size that will hold the next one. Scaling up is a strategy change you forgot to test.

Three green days in a row and the clip doubled. Not because the plan said to. Because the account could suddenly afford it and the win wanted to mean something bigger than it was.

Nobody writes down the size-up. It happens between trades, in the half-second between flattening the last green and loading the next ticket. The share count ticks up. Nothing on the chart changed. Nothing in the setup changed. The thing that changed is the trader, and the trader is now running a strategy they have never actually tested.

THE QUIET SWITCH

You didn't scale a position. You changed the game.

Size feels linear. Twice the shares, twice the P&L, same setup. That is the lie that gets everyone. A bigger clip is not a scaled-up version of a smaller clip. It is a different instrument that happens to share a ticker.

The stop that felt academic at the old size is now a car payment. The slippage you tolerated is suddenly a real number. The first adverse tick, which barely registered yesterday, is now loud enough to tap you out of a winner that would have paid for the month. You are not trading your edge anymore. You are trading your tolerance for the new dollar amount, and your tolerance was built on the old one.

None of this shows up on the chart. All of it shows up in the hold.

THE HOLD BREAKS FIRST

The size-up kills the hold before it kills the account.

Watch what happens on the first trade at the new size. The entry is clean. The thesis is live. The stock does what you expected and then does a little more. And you flatten half. Then the rest. Twenty cents of what should have been a dollar.

You tell yourself you took profit. You didn't. You bought relief. The size was loud and you wanted it quiet again. The smaller-clip version of you would have sat through that same wiggle without blinking, because the dollars at risk were in a range the nervous system had already filed as normal.

A bigger clip isn't a bigger version of your edge. It's a different trade with your ticker on it, and you've never held one all the way through.

The green days didn't earn you a right to the larger size. They earned you a right to the smaller one, done more cleanly. That is a boring sentence and it is also the one that keeps accounts alive past the fourth green day.

THE GIVEBACK MATH

One trade at the new size undoes four at the old one.

Here is the arithmetic nobody wants to do on a green streak. Four green days at your tested size add up to some number. Call it a week. One red day at double size, taken because you were feeling the streak, erases the week and leaves you flat.

Flat is the kind outcome. The usual outcome is worse, because the loss at the new size does not stop at the planned stop. The planned stop was written for the smaller account state. At the new dollar amount, the stop gets widened in the moment, or ignored, or averaged into, because the number on the screen is louder than the rule in the plan.

So the giveback is rarely a one-for-four exchange. It is more like:

  • One red at the new clip equals three to five greens at the old clip.
  • The red is almost always on a setup you would have skipped at the old size, because the new size needs feeding.
  • The next day you are either revenge-sized or revenge-small, and neither of those is your actual strategy either.

The streak didn't fund a bigger trader. It funded a bigger mistake and then charged you the week to learn that.

WHAT ACTUALLY EARNS THE SIZE

A size-up is a promotion, not a mood.

The traders who scale cleanly do it the way a lifter adds weight. Small jumps. Lots of reps at the new weight before the next jump. A written rule that says what has to be true before the clip moves, and a different written rule that says what has to be true before it moves back down.

Specifically, the ones who survive the size-up tend to do three unglamorous things:

  1. They move the clip in small increments, not doublings. Fifteen percent more shares, not twice as many.
  2. They require a sample at the new size before the next bump. Twenty clean executions, not three green days.
  3. They write the down-shift rule first. The size that goes up without a rule to come back down is the size that takes the account.

None of this is intuitive on a green streak. On a green streak the body is telling you that you have figured something out and the market is finally paying you for it. The body is wrong. The market paid you for the small-clip version of the trade. It has no opinion yet on the big-clip version, and it will form one at your expense.

THE SYSTEM PART

You need something that counts the size-up as a strategy change.

The reason the size-up slips through is that no part of the usual trading stack treats it as a decision. The broker doesn't flag it. The chart doesn't flag it. The journal, if it exists at all, logs the shares after the fact and calls it done. The only thing between the green streak and the blown week is a trader asking themselves, in the half-second before the ticket loads, whether this clip is one they have actually earned the right to run.

That is a lot to ask of the half-second. Especially the half-second after a win.

What you want sitting next to you is something that notices the clip has moved before you do. Something that treats a size increase as what it actually is, a new strategy with no track record, and asks you to prove it belongs there instead of letting the streak decide. That is the shape of what MAKETZO is built around. The Strike System watches the drift in your clip the way a good coach watches a lifter's form, and the Focus Room makes the size-up a decision you have to make on purpose rather than one that happens between trades. The platform is for the trader who already knows all of this and still size-ups anyway, because knowing has never been the problem.

If you have had the green week that became the flat week more than once, the gap you are trying to close is not a knowledge gap. It is an enactment gap, and it responds to structure.
